Topic: Mobile Gaming Posted: 1:17 am by GeneralChangKCВ  Rating: 0 0 Reply Permalink Mark as Offensive Wednesday, April 23, 2008 Competent racer, but not much beyond it Speed Racer, the movie-tie-in game from Glu Mobile, hits mobile phones just before the movie's due in theaters. How did it stack up? It's competent, but nothing overly exciting about this racer. There are three play modes: story, free race, and challenge. In the story/campaign, you must do a series of races and score the required minimum (at least a 3rd place finish, if not 2nd or 1st) and win the final grand prix race, against a series of opponents who have cars of slightly different capabilities. In the free race, you can pick any of the cars you unlocked in story mode, and do a race on any of the tracks you unlocked in story mode. In the challenge mode, you can pick either knockout (last place eliminated) or chase (get in front of the other car and stay there for 2 laps), again, in any available car, on any available track. The actual racing part is more like Outrun, in behind-car third-person view. Even the game itself is quite reminiscent of outrun, with speedo at bottom and bitmap based pseudo-3D. Sensation of speed is quite good. The actual racing mechanics relies on basically doing slides (by holding down the right or left key, to slide in respective direction) and other stunts in order to get good "car-fu" ratings, which in turn charges up your nitro gauge, which you then use to further boost your speed. Unlike most games, you start with NO nitro at all. Thus, you have to wait for the car to get to speed before you can perform any tricks This makes the game feel more like Turbo Outrun (with the nitro button). And yes, you CAN use the jumpjacks if you can't get past certain cars. However, I'm usually going so fast I have no problem getting past other cars. The controls are responsive enough, but when you get into sharp S turns the keys somehow aren't reacting fast enough as there's a slight delay before the car goes into "slide mode", and rapid left-right transitions will cause you to scrape the walls and slow down a lot. The visuals are sharp enough but again, bitmapped graphics, not true 3D. This shows when the car goes flying or do the vertical loops... Somehow the graphics ain't quite fast enough. However, for an arcade racer it's not bad, just not that good. Sound and music is okay, but music gets repetitive, and sound isn't much better. There's also no "volume" setting, it's on/off only. All in all, I have to give this title a competent 7, but nothing more. There are better racers out there, but there are worse ones too. Inspired by actual submissions, the stories in "Surviving Highschool '08" are real enough to be authentic, yet funny enough to be playable, which makes a great combination. To put it plainly, this is a bunch of "choose your adventure", with a few minigames thrown in, most of them VERY simple. As you go through your day in school, you decide whether to pay attention to teacher (thus get bonus pt which helps your grades) or to fellow student gossip (thus gaining some popularity points). Off school, you need to decide how to approach your off time, whether it's homework, sports, or just goofing off. Most of the minigames are basically timing based affairs where you mash the center button when it's time. For example, you're given 4 choices, and 10 seconds, and you must choose from the choices within the time limit, but choose from the GOOD choices, and NOT select the bad choices. Another minigame would involve some objects randomly falling from top of screen, but going a bit left and right as well. You need to "catch" (touch) one type but avoid the other type. Others are basically variations on this. As a high school male student, you need to worry about grades, sports, and girlfriend, in roughly that order. You report to a school counselor in the beginning, and try to keep up good grades throughout the semester, play good football games to impress the coach, AND find some time to go out with pretty girls. Are you the kind that attracts goth girls, or the bubbly cheerleader types? And that's just the DEFAULT story! You can download dozens of additional stories for free, none as long as the default "semester-long" story, but just as fun. For example, as the yearbook editor, can you put in a "rumor page" to drive up sales, without making enemies of any one? And stories can be replayed for different outcome. All in all, Surviving High School '08 is one of those text-based games with arcadish minigames thrown in for some extra challenges, and it WILL make you remember your high school days (G-rated, of course!) As anyone who have played a lot of driving games on mobile phones know, Firemint's "The Fast and Furious: Fugitive" is one of the best driving games on cellphones, so what have they done with the engine since? Now we finally learned the answer: an officially licensed WRC game for the phone! For the uninitiated... WRC, or "World Rally Championship", is an international sport of rally racing. Basically a driver, and his co-driver with pace notes, race against the clock, trying to finish each stage in the minimum amount of time, without suffering too much damage. And this is a true WRC game... 8 different WRC teams, the Citroens and Subarus and Fords are here, and up to 12 different locations, each with different mixture of surfaces and demand different driving techniques. There are also various road hazards, such as fallen logs, flipped cars, and so on, and you must dodge. You can choose to play the third-person "from behind" camera, or the 1st-person "hood/bonnet" cam. You can play two modes: arcade have you race against the clock, AND 5 AI opponents. You must make your way to #1 without running out of time for the stage to advance to next stage. Championship, on the other hand, is like the real thing: 10 pts for 1st, and less for lesser places. Try to stay near the top and see who has the most points by the end of the season. The driving model is sensational for a mobile phone game. You can almost feel the slide into the corners as you try to make a 90 degree turn in the road. It appears that the same engine that powered FF:F is powering this game as well, and the game is responsive, though it feels just a tad slower than FF:F. Racing is not all though. The game also lets you do "crowd-pleasers" by going at max speed through the audience sections. If you go fast and do spectacular jumps and so on, you'll get crowd-pleaser-bonus, which can help unlock bonuses such as acceleration, handling, and braking (though how much those help was never established). Too bad there aren't any way to change tires or otherwise "setup" the vehicle, or to do repairs. Apparently, all that is done for you by the team manager. You *could* damage the car... by sliding out of corners and hitting walls, or hitting the hazards. Those *could* damage your car and if you damage it enough, your run is finished. All in all, WRC is one amazing driving game that I just wish is a little more complicated or involved. The built-in "lounge" lets you compete world-wide against other players in terms of time and points, and that prolongs replayability.
